Chapter 13

LAUGHTER BURSTS OUT of me, just as the front door opens. Lucas walks in, smiling as he sees me laugh, but his smile slowly fades as he sees we have company.

Well, I have company.

“Hey, what’s happening?” Lucas asks, looking between me, Aaliyah and the gentleman beside me.

I calm myself and smile at him. “Not much. How was work?” I ask, watching as he takes his work boots off beside the door after closing it.

“Good.” He answers, a questioning look in his eyes as he stares back at me. “I see you’ve got company.” He nods to the person sitting beside me.

“Oh. Yes.” I smile at Tom, turning my gaze back to Lucas. “Remember my friend Chris? The one that used to come visit me when I first moved here.” I clarify for him.

Lucas nods, stiffly. “Vaguely.” He didn’t care for Chris.

He always thought he was in love with me. I thought it was just infatuation.

“Well, this is his dad, Officer Johnson.”

His whole demeanor changes as his body stiffens. “Officer Johnson?”

Tom laughs at Lucas’s reaction. “Call me Tom, please.” He requests, shaking his head at me.

“Lucas.” He nods once, his guard still up.

“Relax, Luc. He’s not here for anything other than to fill me in on what’s happening back home.”

“Lucas?” Tom asks, his brow raised in question. “The Lucas?” He shifts his eyes between us and I nod.

“What does he mean, The Lucas?” Lucas asks, furrowing his brows.

“Son, it’s nothing bad. Natalia explained to me what you did for her. I’ve got to say, whoever the judge was at the time was an asshole.” He grumbles, feeling sorry for Lucas. “Excuse my language.” He says to Aaliyah, but she just giggles and continues to play.

“Tom came to give me some news.” I tell Lucas as he approaches the couch and takes a seat beside me.

“What news?” He asks, watching Aaliyah play.

I swallow, hard. “Preston has been found and arrested.”

Honestly, this is the best news I’ve heard in a while. Now hopefully I don’t have to stress and keep looking over my shoulder, wondering if he’s going to find me.

Lucas nods and turns to me. “What for?” He asks and I was afraid this topic would come up, sooner or later.

“He doesn’t know?” Tom asks, surprised.

“No.” I admit, covering my face with my hands, hiding in shame.

“Nat-” Tom starts, but I cut him off.

“When I found out I was pregnant, Preston wasn’t happy. He left, but came back later. He demanded we get married, but I refused. That was the start of it.” I give him the short version.

“Start of what?” Lucas asks, moving to the edge of the couch and taking my hands in his.

I take a deep breath and release it, squeezing his hand for comfort. “Preston wasn’t the nicest person, especially when he was drunk or high. That night, he was drunk and choked me. After that, things got worse and eventually, I was able to leave, but not before he threatened to harm me, if I ever did.
